Bushnell, David (Saybrook, Connecticut 1742 - Warrenton, Georgia 1824), ingegnere navale statunitense. Nel 1775 costruì il primo sottomarino militare; il natante, chiamato The Turtle (Tartaruga), poteva ospitare un solo passeggero, aveva scafo in legno ed era azionato da propulsori e pompe a mano. All'esterno veniva fissata una bomba contenente polvere da sparo, dotata di spoletta a tempo.
